How to delete apps on iPhone?
Share
Whether you’re looking to clear up storage space or simply declutter your home screen, managing apps on an iPhone has evolved with the latest iOS updates. You now have the choice to permanently delete an app, "offload" it to save space while keeping your data, or simply hide it in the App Library.
Here is a comprehensive guide on how to delete and manage apps on your iPhone.
1. The Quickest Way: From the Home Screen
This is the most common method for a single app.
-
Long Press: Find the app icon you want to remove and press and hold it.
-
Select "Remove App": A menu will appear. Tap Remove App (indicated by a red minus symbol).
-
Choose Your Action:
-
Delete App: This permanently uninstalls the app and deletes all its data from your phone.
-
Remove from Home Screen: The app stays on your phone but is moved to the App Library (swipe all the way to the right to find it).
-
Pro Tip: To delete multiple apps quickly, long-press on an empty area of your wallpaper until the icons start to "jiggle." You can then tap the minus (–) icon on several apps in a row.
2. The Storage-Saver: Using Settings
If you are deleting apps to free up space, doing it through Settings is better because it shows you exactly how much storage each app is using.
-
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
-
Scroll down to see a list of your apps sorted by size.
-
Tap the app you want to manage.
-
Choose one of two options:
-
Offload App: This deletes the app but keeps its documents and data. If you reinstall it later, your settings and progress will still be there.
-
Delete App: This removes the app and all associated data permanently.
-
3. From the App Library
If an app is already hidden from your home screen, you can find and delete it in the App Library.
-
Swipe left past your last page of apps until you reach the App Library.
-
Locate the app in its category folder or search for it at the top.
-
Long-press the icon and select Delete App.
Troubleshooting: Why can't I delete an app?
If you don't see the "Delete App" option, it is usually due to one of three reasons:
-
Core Apple Apps: Some system apps like Settings, Phone, and Messages cannot be deleted.
-
Screen Time Restrictions: Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases. Ensure "Deleting Apps" is set to Allow.
-
MDM Profiles: If your phone is provided by work or school, they may have a management profile that prevents app deletion.
